The Better Business Bureau of San Diego & Imperial Counties conducts this annual scholarship program in conjunction with the BBB Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics. The BBB offers cash scholarships to five high school students who write outstanding essays on “The Importance of Ethics and Integrity in our Community.”

2011 entries were due on October 24, 2011. A total of 221 essays from students attending 61 different high schools in San Diego County were evaluated by a panel of judges.

2011 Torch Award Scholarship Recipients are:

Andrew Alvarado, a senior at Hilltop High School in Chula Vista ($500);

Eduardo De La Toba, a senior at EastLake High School in Chula Vista ($750);

Daimen Sagastume, a junior at Monte Vista High School in Spring Valley ($1,000);

Lilia Ortiz, a senior at Bonita Vista High School in Chula Vista ($1,250);

Anthony Puzo, a senior at Carlsbad High School ($1,500).

In his essay, Puzo wrote about how lack of ethics and integrity “can bring a country to its knees,” and he cited Iraq and Libya, as well as Germany in 1933. Puzo wrote: “Ask anyone who has had to deal with the fallout of a person of poor moral character. They know the destruction.”
