On the evening of January 12th, over 120 people made their way down to the Fleetwood Lounge located in the heart of Downtown's Gaslamp District for your BBB’s first bi-monthly mixer of 2012. The cool and contemporary design of the Fleetwood Lounge as well as the warm San Diego sunset shaped the mood for an enjoyable night of business networking for some of San Diego’s top business professionals.

A friend, who just started a small law and mediation firm, called me last week for marketing advice, specifically online marketing advice. His website, which has only existed for 6 months, has still not reached the first page of Google under common search terms, and he was looking for SEO tricks that would help him achieve that goal.

As I sit at my computer this morning with several browser windows open as well as my email and a few word documents, you’d be surprised to find out that I’m not paying the slightest bit of attention to my computer screen. No, I have my nose buried in my iPhone, checking on my email as well as doing various other work tasks.

My dad is a small business owner. No, my dad is a stubborn small business owner. He insists each year on spending hundreds of dollars on over-priced advertising.

For marketers, Facebook can be your most useful tool, but it can also be the most frustrating. As someone who considers themselves “tech-savvy,” I am constantly befuddled by Facebook’s new rules, changes and its users.

It isn’t easy to always be at the top of your game. For most of us, even if we eat our Wheaties every day, the likelihood that we bring creative and competitively-charged ideas to work with us each morning is far-fetched.

A few weeks ago, I was speaking with a reporter; having emailed her a pitch for a news story, I was following up over the telephone. I was sharply informed by the busy journalist that emails and phone calls were rarely checked, and that all communication should take place through Twitter. What? Did I doze off at my desk and wake up in a “Bruce Willis’ Surrogates-esque” world?

The sun was shining in La Jolla as businesses arrived to the BBB B2B Mixer on July 7th. UCSD’s Ida and Cecil Green Faculty Center’s Interior Courtyard made a beautiful backdrop for an evening filled with the networking of like-minded business professionals.

What’s black and white and appearing all over your favorite magazines and television programs? It’s called a QR code, and no, it’s not a printing or broadcasting error. Rather, it’s the newest way for consumers to access up-to-date detailed information about anything from contests on your local news station to a sale at Macy’s.

On a sunny, beautiful day most people in San Diego move West toward the beaches, but last Thursday over a hundred of you shuffled inland to a quaint winery, tucked away in Rancho Bernardo where the BBB was hosting its 15th B2B Networking Mixer.

Cold calling is no fun. The hang-ups and disinterest alone are enough to turn someone off of the practice. Telemarketers can tell you that it can be disheartening when no one wants what you’re selling.

I have a mustache necklace. I wear it often and with purpose. Recently, a coworker, who witnessed me using the necklace as if it was an actual mustache, questioned whether or not I was a small child hiding out in a twenty-something’s body? This naturally spurned a conversation about why marketing seemingly has more fun than other departments.
