Our key activities in 2013:
Since the Student Ambassador Program began in 2006, it has reached thousands of young consumers across the nation. In early January of this year, the Better Business Bureau Foundation sent out invitations for up to four juniors or seniors from each local high school to participate in the 2013 BBB Student Ambassador Program. Once students are chosen, they attend a two hour training which covers important topics such as how to check your credit to understand identity theft and how to avoid becoming a victim.
In 2013 with Wells Fargo as the program sponsor, 11 Ambassadors reached 1,300 high school students all over San Diego and Imperial Counties.
Stephen Carpenter of Kearny Digital Media Design (DMD) took third place, speaking to 67 students, receiving a $1,000 scholarship.
In second place, Gilbert Ortiz and Esteban Alvarado of Ramona High School spoke to 238 students, dividing a $1,500 scholarship.
The first place winners, Isabella Speedon and Laura Leon of Oceanside High School, spoke to an incredible 743 students and split a well-deserved scholarship of $2,500.
Each participating student, winners and otherwise, received a certification of completion for their involvement in the 2013 program.
BBB Foundation’s Military Line program continued to successfully bring education and fraud protection advice to service members and their families all over San Diego, from Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and Air Station Miramar to 32nd Street Naval Station downtown. Through our strong relationship with our local military community, we had the honor of participating in the following programs:
® Consumer Saves & Department of Defense’s Financial Readiness Campaign’s Military Saves Week
® Naval Base San Diego & Marine Corps Air Station Miramar’s Fleet & Family Support Center Command Financial Specialist Training
® Naval Base San Diego’s Fleet & Family Support Center Fleet Liaison Orientation Program
The 2013 Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics will honor businesses and charities for their ethical business practices on December 3rd, 2013 at the Town & Country. This program celebrates organizations for their superior commitment to exceptional standards that benefit their consumers, employees, suppliers, shareholders and surrounding communities. Last year at the 2012 Torch Awards, 14 businesses and charities were recognized for their committment to ethics and integrity.
[The 16th Annual Gerry Wilson Golf Classic]
In order to provide these programs and services to the over three million people living in San Diego and Imperial Counties, the San Diego BBB Foundation fundraises by holding an annual golf tournament that honors our late CEO Gerry Wilson. Hosting over 100 golfers every year, money is raised primarily through an auction that is held with generous donations from businesses around the community. This year’s tournament took place at the Maderas Golf Club and raised thousands of dollars for the BBB Foundation. Participation in this event is an integral part of keeping the BBB mission alive.
