Our mission
: Protect, inform, and distribute both funds and resources to better the development and welfare of the resident and business communities of San Diego and Imperial Counties.

Our work:

Contributing to our sponsors activities and events that are exclusively charitable and educational

Participating in programs that benefit high school students, Military service members, trustworthy businesses and thousands of consumers

Providing up-to-date, helpful information and programs about scams, frauds and choosing ethical businesses.

Providing ongoing education that focuses on relevant topics to assist businesses and nonprofits conduct daily operations reliably and ethically.

Our key activities in 2012:

[Student Ambassadors]

Since the Student Ambassador Program began in 2006, it has reached thousands of young consumers across the nation. In early January of this year, the Better Business Bureau Foundation sent out invitations for up to four juniors or seniors from each local high school to participate in the 2012 BBB Student Ambassador Program. Once students are chosen, they attend a two hour training which covers important topics such as how to check your credit to understand identity theft and how to avoid becoming a victim.

In 2012, 20 Ambassadors reached 2,300 high school students – the second largest number of students reached since the program began!

Taking third place Robert Jertberg, Garrett Barclay, Cameron Roberts and Noel Benitez from St. Augustine High School split a $1,000 scholarship, after speaking to 231 students in 8 speeches.

In second place, dividing a $1,500 scholarship was Kayla Barreto and Bianca Jamara of El Camino High School who spoke to 273 students over 8 speeches.

Rosanna Thai and Susan Bennington of Oceanside High School took home the grand prize scholarship of $2,500 after speaking to a record breaking 1000 students in 32 speeches.

[Military Line]

BBB Foundation’s Military Line program continued to successfully bring education and fraud protection advice to service members and their families all over San Diego, from Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and Air Station Miramar to 32nd Street Naval Station downtown. Through our strong relationship with our local military community, we had the honor of participating in the following programs:

® Consumer Saves & Department of Defense’s Financial Readiness Campaign’s Military Saves Week

® Naval Base San Diego & Marine Corps Air Station Miramar’s Fleet & Family Support Center Command Financial Specialist Training

® Naval Base San Diego’s Fleet & Family Support Center Fleet Liaison Orientation Program

[Torch Awards]

The 2012 Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics honored 14 businesses and charities for their ethical business practices. This program celebrates organizations for their superior commitment to exceptional standards that benefit their consumers, employees, suppliers, shareholders and surrounding communities.

[The 16th Annual Gerry Wilson Golf Classic]

In order to provide these programs and services to the over three million people living in San Diego and Imperial Counties, the San Diego BBB Foundation fundraises by holding an annual golf tournament that honors our late CEO Gerry Wilson. Hosting over 100 golfers every year, money is raised primarily through an auction that is held with generous donations from businesses around the community. This year’s tournament took place at the La Costa Resort and raised thousands of dollars for the BBB Foundation. Participation in this event is an integral part of keeping the BBB mission alive.
