March 25, 2013 (SAN DIEGO, CA) – San Diego BBB, with the help of Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) and the City Attorney’s office, will appear on Channel 10 News tonight at 5pm to answer consumer questions on-air regarding identity theft.
This is the second consecutive year the BBB has participated in a phone bank with Channel 10 News. Last year, the BBB was on hand to answer any consumer questions regarding marketplace issues. The phone bank was extremely successful, garnering over 130 phone calls and reaching innumerable San Diego home viewers.
“The 10 News Phone Bank is an excellent way to reach a large group of San Diego consumers,” said BBB President and CEO Sheryl Bilbrey. “We’re grateful to have the opportunity to educate not only the callers who ask us questions, but all of Channel 10’s viewers who watch from home and learn about this important consumer issue.”
Identity theft is one of the fastest growing types of consumer fraud in the country. In fact, identity theft in 2012 accounted for 18%, or nearly 370,000 of all consumer complaints to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Victims of the crime can be old or young, male or female, Asian or White. Identities are stolen across all technologies – from social media and email to simply digging old credit card bills out of the trash of a neighbor or relative.
Because of the vast span of victims and motives, consumers are often caught off guard by identity theft scams, and can find themselves severely in debt when all is said and done.
“It’s certainly something that we hear about daily at the BBB,” said President and CEO Sheryl Bilbrey. “Identity theft, if caught early, can cause very little damage to a consumer; however, what happens often is that years pass before the victim realizes what has happened to them. At that point, a lot can be lost.”
At this year’s Phone Bank, the BBB is honored to be in the company of non-profit organization ITRC as well as the City Attorney’s office. Each entity, along with the BBB, works tirelessly each day to ensure that consumers are educated about marketplace issues, including identity theft.
If you are interested in speaking with someone about identity theft at today’s phone bank, tune into Channel 10 News from 5:00pm to 6:30pm. San Diego BBB, ITRC and the City Attorney’s office will be standing by for your phone calls, and we’re looking forward to answering your questions and further serving the San Diego community.
