I met Holly Petraeus via e-mail the first year I came to the BBB. Holly was trying to launch a new program to better serve our military bases. I learned that the project had been launched in Tennessee and Texas. Like a mother hen, I shot Holly an e-mail that basically said “Hey! What about San Diego? Don’t you know how big and important and impressive WE are? We need to get those services HERE!” Well, Holly obliged and sent in some troops, I mean support.
That was before I really knew Holly. That was before I discovered that she was a General’s daughter. That was before I learned about her family legacy. That was before her husband became THE General. And you know what has changed about Holly in the wake of her family fame? As far as I can see, not a darn thing. I still send e-mails, I still ask for help to serve our servicemen and women, and Holly still brings the troops, I mean support. And yes, it surprises me that she can find the time to come speak at our Torch Awards Celebration next week. And yet, as I continue to get to know Holly, I am inspired by her mission-driven enthusiasm.
Military Line is a partnership between the BBB and the Department of Defense (DoD) Financial Readiness Campaign, bringing BBB services to military personnel (including Reservists and National Guard), retirees, DoD civilians, and their families. I personally find the time every month to speak to our Navy leaders on base through Fleet and Family Services. Our military personnel are generally young, transient, loyal souls with a steady paycheck. Thus, they are a perfect con-artist target. Our service men and women deserve to be armed with the right stuff. And when it comes to financial management, the BBB is playing a vital supportive role, thanks to the vision and initiative of “the other” Petraeus, Holly.
